What was your experience like in the Development Program?
My time in the Engineering Development Program was both exciting and informative. The Program allowed me to gain valuable insights into the business and company while fostering a deep understanding of our operations and objectives. Moreover, I had the opportunity to connect with and learn from a diverse group of talented individuals, expanding my professional network and skillset. Most importantly, this Program kick-started my career as a software engineer, providing me with the foundation and confidence needed to excel in my role.

The Engineering Development Program at 84.51° was instrumental in preparing me for success as a software engineer within the company. Through this program, I built a solid foundation for starting my professional career as a software engineer. Being exposed to diverse perspectives and collaborating with my peers honed my problem-solving and communication skills. The program’s comprehensive material has empowered me to contribute effectively to my team and deliver innovative solutions that align with 84.51°'s mission.
What did you learn from the Development Program that you have transferred into your current role?
During the Engineering Development Program, I gained a working knowledge of a wide range of software tools and techniques. This exposure helped me to broaden my skill set and prepared me to tackle diverse challenges as a software engineer. I learned the fundamentals of tools like Docker for containerization and Angular for responsive web design. Additionally, the Program provided insights into the Agile methodology and coding best practices which have been invaluable in my day-to-day tasks. This diverse exposure has empowered me to adapt quickly to new technologies and efficiently contribute to projects with varying requirements.
Is there anything you wish you had known about the Development Program prior to enrolling?
Before enrolling in the Development Program, I wish I had a clearer understanding of what to expect both during the Program itself and in my full-time role afterward. I didn't have a comprehensive picture of the day-to-day tasks, the specific projects I would work on, or how the program would directly correlate with my responsibilities as a software engineer. This lack of clarity led to some uncertainty, but ultimately, the experience exceeded my expectations, and the skills I gained have proven invaluable in my current role.
What has been the most memorable experience or favorite project you’ve worked on?
My favorite project to date is the new creative tool that my team and I are building for 84.51°’s new media platform. What made it particularly exciting was the opportunity to build something entirely from the ground up. Being part of the ideation phase, shaping the concept, and then translating those ideas into a fully functional tool was a gratifying journey. This holistic involvement from inception to execution has made it a truly fulfilling and memorable experience in my career as a software engineer.
Did you go through the internship program at 84.51° prior to graduating? If so, what was that experience like?
Yes, I interned at 84.51° the summer before starting the Engineering Development Program. During my internship, I was part of the Meridian team, where I had the exciting opportunity to redesign and develop a page on their documentation website. It was a valuable experience that allowed me to apply my skills in a real-world setting, collaborate with experienced professionals, and contribute meaningfully to a project. This internship not only enhanced my technical abilities but also gave me insights into the company's culture and values, making it a pivotal steppingstone in my journey toward becoming a software engineer at 84.51°.
What advice would you give students who are interested in working in the engineering industry?
My advice to students interested in working in the engineering industry is to ensure they are genuinely passionate about the work. Software engineering is a dynamic field that blends creative problem-solving with technological innovation so a genuine passion for both of those is crucial. I recommend that students seek internships or co-op roles to gain practical experience before graduating. Also, don't allow imposter syndrome to deter you from pursuing a career in engineering. Recognize that diversity of thought and background is an asset in the engineering world, and your unique perspective can lead to valuable contributions and fresh insights.
What’s your favorite part about working at 84.51°? Do you have a favorite benefit or perk that is offered?
My favorite part about working at 84.51° has to be the people. The collaborative and supportive environment here is truly exceptional, and I always feel grateful that I get to work alongside such talented and passionate individuals. As for perks, I really enjoy the generous paid time off (PTO) policy. It allows for a healthy work-life balance and the opportunity to recharge, which ultimately contributes to my overall job satisfaction.
What do you like to do in your free time outside of work hours?
When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my friends, family, and my cat, Ruby. I also love reading (add me on Goodreads!), trying out new baking recipes, and weightlifting. When I'm feeling creative, I enjoy painting and crocheting.
