Bringing our authentic selves to work during Pride…and beyond

Image 4 1

At 84.51°, we pride ourselves on creating a culture that inspires our associates to bring their whole authentic selves to work every day. After all, when our associates feel valued and respected for who they are, they feel a greater sense of belonging. We’re proud to spotlight how this comes to life – especially during the month of Pride.

What does Pride mean to you?

For me, Pride is more than just a month-long celebration of LGBTQ+ identities. It's a deep acknowledgment of our right to exist authentically. Pride reminds me of the sacrifices made by those who came before us, the ones who fought so that my husband and I could legally marry five years ago. That's a gift I cherish every day. It's also a way to honor the brave individuals at the Stonewall Inn, whose actions sparked a movement.

During my teenage years in the early 2000s, I never imagined I'd see marriage equality in my lifetime. Every step towards greater visibility and acceptance fills me with hope, but I also recognize the ongoing struggles for full LGBTQ+ equality. Pride is a reminder that we still have work to do.

How has 84.51° helped you embrace your authentic self?

At 84.51°, I've truly felt empowered to be my authentic self. Their commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment has been uplifting. Knowing that I'm valued for who I am allows me to bring my whole self to work, and that's when I can do my best work. It's a feeling of acceptance and belonging that I'm incredibly grateful for.

How do you celebrate Pride in June (and all year long)?

Beyond Pride Month every June, I eagerly anticipate Pride Night at Kings Island each September. It's a night that fills my heart with joy and reassurance, seeing so many couples like my husband and me, simply enjoying each other's company. For one special night, I can hold his hand freely, without the fear of judgment or hateful words that sometimes shadow our everyday lives. While this night is incredibly special, Pride for me is more than a single event; it's about embracing love and living authentically, each and every day.

How can allies best support their LGBTQ+ colleagues and friends?

Before I found the courage to come out at 14, even the smallest symbols of acceptance, like a rainbow flag or equality sticker, felt like a lifeline. They whispered to my heart that I wasn't alone and that others care, especially during those difficult times when I felt like I was hiding a part of my authentic self. Allies can make a difference by listening to our stories, educating themselves, and using their voices to advocate for equality.

What’s one thing you think everyone can do to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion?

The most important thing is to approach LGBTQ+ people with an open heart and mind. Withhold judgment, ask questions with genuine curiosity, and most importantly, listen to understand. When we feel seen and heard, it creates a ripple effect of acceptance and change.
